Landfill Lining and Capping

Ensuring landfill sites are lined correctly to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment
In accordance with guidelines set out by the Environment Agency, UK Landfill sites are required to be lined in a manner that minimises possible impacts on the surrounding environment. The use of HDPE liners for landfill sites has become standard practice since its introduction in the 1980s, replacing the use of standard PVC liner. HDPE Geosynthetic liner is preferable to PVC liner, due to its broad chemical and weather resistant properties,

HDPE liners provide a more stable and long-lasting containment barrier and are used on the majority of landfill sites across the UK. In addition, landfills are also required to be capped - to help contain gases generated by landfill sites and to ensure that rainwater does not become leachate.

Our expert team will recommend the most appropriate lining materials for your landfill class. We can then fabricate and install the Geosynthetic materials required, helping you to meet the regulations and guidelines set out by the Environment Agency or your country’s equivalent regulatory body, with relation to landfill capping.

Our tried and tested process which we have defined through the years

Landfill Lining & Capping
Compaction of the sub-grade to receive the lining system, such that the resulting formation surfaces are uniform and free of void areas and soft spots
In certain circumstances (Landfill Cell Lining) a GCL (Geosynthetic Clay Liner) is laid in conjunction with the other Geosynthetic items. This creates a Secondary Liner. The Geomembrane liner is placed, and welded to fit the prepared surfaces.
The installed liner is air-pressure tested as each seam is formed.
A suitable non-woven Geotextile Overlay or Geocomposite is installed above the Geomembrane Liner, to provide additional protection prior to backfilling.
