Athens Olympics 2004

A worldwide television audience of over 4 billion people watched the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Central to the opening ceremony was a temporary lake within the main Olympic Stadium. The lake was lined by Geosynthetic Technology Ltd using a specially formulated 1.20mm Polypropylene liner. The liner was manufactured in a specific light grey colour to ensure it blended with the other construction materials used to create the set.

The construction phase for the building and lining of the lake involved an exceptionally tight programme; this meant our staff were often engaged in night working to ensure the deadline was met!

Following construction and lining, the lake was filled with over 2 million gallons of water. During the opening ceremony the lake was used for various visual displays including a proprietary gas system that produced the Olympic rings. The closing phase of the ceremony saw the lake being drained in just 3 minutes, exposing a grating, above the liner, onto which the thousands of competitors gathered.

GT is proud that our materials and installation services met the designer's specification, and hope that they will be used for projects in the forthcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.
